Dante and Pandora

Description

Pandora doesn't get enough love. It's an amazing weapon and although I've seen plenty of Dante cosplayers rocking Ebony and Ivory (his guns) and Rebellion (his sword), I've never seen anyone attempt to make Pandora, one of the other weapons you find and wield during Dante's campaign in Devil May Cry 4.

Looking like a demonic glowing box in its sealed form, once released Pandora can turn into any of 666 different weapons. Not only does it look snazzy, it absolutely minces all but the toughest enemies.

Since no-one ever bothers making it, I decided to construct my own glowing Pandora prop.

The construction process was pretty simple. The body of the prop is made from six sheets of foamboard that have been coated in PVA glue to strengthen it, then painted with multiple layers of gesso. The criss-crossing network of lines you can see on the front were painstakingly drawn with a pencil and ruler before being cut out with a craft knife over the course of several hours. The demonic design that you can see front and centre was made from worbla. The back panel is attached with hinges so that it can be opened when required. On the inside of the back panel I glued three battery operated push lights (the ones that you touch to turn on and off - they can be found at your local Poundland). Since the lights emit a white glow, and the glow that comes through Pandora's lines is supposed to be yellow, I glued an A3 sheet of yellow acetate to the inside of the front panel.

What does all this mean?

It means that the back of the prop can be opened, the lights turned on, and the back shut again to create the glowing effect you see above.

Unfortunately it only works effectively in darkly light areas but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

If anyone wants further advice on how to make your own Pandora (or a similar prop) please do feel free to get in touch!

I love this shot; the dim lighting really adds to the atmosphere. And it's so cool that you made your own Pandora prop!
